Good morning, my name is Chantal Gerges and I’m here to report on the life threatening HIV/AIDS virus, particularly in Africa where the HIV rate is greatest. The continent of Africa has more HIV related illness than the rest of the world combined.
Firstly, HIV stands for this Human Immune Deficiency Virus and is a disease that infects blood. This virus attacks and kills the white blood cells causing the immune system to shut down. Not only is it transmitted sexually, but it transmitted through the blood and the sharing of needles. HIV can then also progress into full blown AIDS.
Recent studies completed in 2013 have shown that there are over a million people in Ethiopia living with HIV. They have a 1.2% prevalence rate for adults aged 15-49. Shockingly, 590,000 of the million are 15 years or older. 370,000 of them are women aged 15 and older and 200,000 children from 0-14 years of age are living with HIV. Each year there are 45,000 deaths due to AIDS and there are 900,000 orphans aged 0-17 due to AIDS in Ethiopia alone.
Although, Ethiopia’s HIV rate dropped a dramatic 25% between 2001 and 2009, there is still a million people still living with HIV 90,000 of those are pregnant women. of those 90,000, only 9.3% are eligible for treatment and care. The country is trying to improve this issue as they signed onto the Global Plan towards the elimination of HIV infections among children and their aim is to provide at least 80% of HIV-positive pregnant women with antiretroviral prophylaxis.
So, this Human Immune Deficiency Virus is a blood affecting disease that can cause the immune system to shut down. Over a million Ethiopian people are currently living with HIV/AIDS, tens of thousands of which are pregnant women which the government is trying to provide care for.
Thank you.
